Objectives include:

  • Jumping and landing stability for control when going for a mark or spoil
  • Shoulder and wrist strength, stability, and power to be able to hold tackles convincingly and not let go of the opposition. And to mark the ball with confidence.
  • Maintain high end speed and endurance, play on unstable ground, take off and burst “through the pack”, kick with power and have no fear of ‘pinging’ your hamstring

  • Greater endurance, power, and capacity to run box-to-box for longer (midfielder), beat and get in behind or take on your defender with ease (attacker) and ’shut the striker/winger out of the game’ (defender)
  • Jumping and landing stability and control when contesting and / or “going up” for a header during the game or during a corner
  • Agility, dynamic, sharpness and sudden change of direction when following ‘the play’ or pressing the opposition team and transitioning throughout the game

  • Agility, sudden stops, direction changes or ’shimmy’ to ‘throw off’ the defender and shoot ‘three pointers’, keep focused on the shooting guard or point guard with movement to ‘block their shot’
  • Stronger and more powerful hands, wrists and fingers to grip, control and shoot the ball and reduce risk of jarring and ligament sprains or muscular strains of the upper limbs
