What is Exercise Physiology?

So much has been written about the importance of movement in helping heal the body – an Exercise Physiologist takes this to another level, using exercise to help people manage chronic disease, injury or disability. Anyone suffering with pain should not be walking into a gym and potentially exacerbating their situation! They need expert guidance to ensure that what they are doing for their body is both safe and beneficial. An accredited Exercise Physiologist can play a critical role in your recovery, because they will assess your current health and condition, and make exercise recommendations specific to your situation.

Typical conditions that can be managed with Exercise Physiology include:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Balance Issues
  • Mental Health
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke rehabilitation
  • Cancer
  • Pregnancy & Post Natal
  • Respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD
  • Neurological conditions such as brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and MS

An EP can also work with the ‘healthy’ population for those who are seeking expert exercise advice. This might include:

  • Individuals who have not exercised before, lack confidence or just don’t know where to start
  • Women who are pregnant, trying to conceive or wanting extra care/advice during the post-natal period
  • Athletes looking for injury prevention or a performance-based program

The First Step

During your initial assessment, our EP will assess your current health state and set some goals. This might involve a discussion about your medical history, medications and physical activity status, as well as looking at some light fitness testing or baseline measurements. • 1:1 Exercise sessions in our private clinic gym
